What it Takes to Get Veneers, Step by Step

Before and after of a set of veneers

Veneers are one of the most celebrated cosmetic treatments that there is. They’re capable of making startling changes to the shape, color, and alignment of your smile with a single treatment, and within just two appointments.

While most people are at least vaguely familiar with what veneers are, they might not know precisely what the process of creating them entails. If you’re curious, here’s a quick overview of the step-by-step process of getting veneers.

Step 1: Consultation

As with any cosmetic dental treatment, the first step will be to talk to your dentist about what it is that you’re looking for. This consultation will be an opportunity to ask any questions that you have, review the options available to you, and outline what your treatment is going to look like.

Step 2: Preparation & Planning

When it becomes clear that veneers are the best option for you, your dentist will be able to prepare you for the next stage of your treatment. This involves taking digital scans of your teeth and designing what your cosmetics will look like, which you will have a say in.

They’ll then remove a small amount of your enamel, which is done to make room for the eventual veneers. Without this process, veneers won’t be able to sit flush against the rest of the smile. Once this has been completed, a set of temporary veneers will be placed on the teeth in order to protect them.

Step 3: Creation

Veneers are usually crafted in a specialized lab based on the designs your dentist created. These labs use advanced technology and high-quality materials to craft your cosmetics, a process that will usually take a few weeks.

During this time, you will need to rely on your temporary veneers in order to protect the teeth. They’ll be adhered with a much weaker cement than will be used on permanent veneers, so you’ll have to be careful not to accidentally dislodge them.

Step 4: Placement

Once your veneers are complete, your dentist will bring you back in for a follow-up appointment. They will remove your temporary veneers, check the integrity of your teeth, then put your final cosmetics in place.

After a few weeks and two dental appointments, you’ll be able to leave your dentist’s office with a brand-new smile you can be proud of!
