Summertime is finally upon us, and you’ve probably got a lot of things going on this season! If traveling is on your to-do list, a dental emergency is probably the very last thing on your mind. But these types of incidents do not discriminate, and they can occur any time or any place—even while you’re on vacation! That said, being prepared and knowing what to do as the situation unfolds can sometimes make a huge difference in your well-being! Keep reading to learn more from your emergency dentist in Skokie about dental emergencies and how to handle them during summer vacation.

Common Summertime Dental Emergencies

There are many kinds of dental emergencies, but some of the common ones that people experience during the summertime include:

  • Toothaches and throbbing pain.
  • Hypersensitivity.
  • Chipped or fractured teeth.
  • Knocked-out teeth.

Preparing For a Summertime Dental Emergency

Realistically, it’s not possible to prevent emergencies entirely; however, it is possible to be prepared for one! Take a page from the Boy Scout’s handbook and be prepared by doing the following:

  • Prepare an emergency kit – This doesn’t have to be anything fancy or expensive, but at least include items like gauze, dental wax, over-the-counter pain relievers, and a small plastic container for displaced teeth.
  • Schedule a dental visit before leaving – By visiting your dentist before you leave, you’re giving them the chance to inspect your mouth for any potential problems.
  • Practice good oral hygiene – Whether you’re at home or in a hotel, you should practice good oral hygiene. Brush and floss daily and use an antibacterial mouthwash.
  • Research local dentists in your destination – If you already know exactly where to go in the event of an emergency, you’re giving your mouth the best chance of being treated quickly and correctly.

What To Do When You Suffer a Dental Emergency During Summer Vacation

Though many dental emergencies are a result of physical trauma, they can sometimes occur unexpectedly and out of the blue! In any case, a little quick thinking and acting fast is usually what makes all the difference. If you have travel insurance, you can contact a local dentist who can likely see you. In other cases, it might be easier to simply visit an emergency room depending on your trauma. No matter what sort of emergency you’re experiencing, you should also contact your primary dentist back home so you can visit them upon your return—they will want to take over your care from there.

Dental emergencies are never fun; especially when they happen during summer vacation! That said, you don’t need to fret and worry about your entire trip being jeopardized; being prepared and knowing what to do can ensure your mouth’s well-being and keep the good times rolling.
