In 2023, the American Cancer Society estimates that more than 54,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with oral cancer. To spread awareness on important factors like which symptoms to look out for, who is at risk, and why early detection is crucial, April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. If you’d like to learn more about this condition and what you can do to minimize your chances of developing it, read on.

6 Risk Factors of Oral Cancer

Extensive research has shown that oral cancer develops when the cells in the tissues of your mouth grow at a rapid rate. This is most often associated with:

  • Tobacco use
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Age (most patients with oral cancer are over 40)
  • Gender (males are more likely to get oral cancer)
  • UV exposure (like tanning beds and prolonged time in the sun)

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Whether you are considered “at-risk” or not, it’s smart to be aware of the common signs and symptoms. That way, you can detect it in the early stages and get it treated before it advances. With this in mind, take note of:

  • A sore or lesion in your mouth or on your lips that won’t heal
  • A lump or mass on your lips or in your mouth
  • White or red patches on the inside of your cheek, your gums, or your tongue
  • Chronic pain in your mouth
  • Bleeding in your mouth
  • A swollen jaw
  • Trouble chewing

Why Early Detection Is So Important (& How Your Dentist Can Help!)

Simply put, early detection is crucial because it ensures that treatment is administered in the early stages, before the cancer can progress to the advanced stages. While some symptoms, like a sore that won’t heal, will certainly be noticeable, others often fly under the radar. That’s why you should never skip your biannual checkups and cleanings with your dentist! During the exam, they will take a few minutes to screen for red patches, lesions, and other warning signs of oral cancer. If they notice anything concerning, they will bring it to your attention and work with your primary care physician to get you the treatment you need.
